International Women's Day

International Women’s Day is a day where we celebrate women's empowerment and recognise the struggles of women around the world.

At Macarthur Girls High School we decided to try things a bit differently this year. The brilliant minds of the SRC came up with a unique plan that involved a video/photo booth and the minds of young teenage girls. Confused? Let me explain.

This year we wanted to directly involve the girls at Macarthur and to provide an opportunity for them to inspire change. We set up a video and photo booth where girls could go record their ideas for change not only about women but also society as a whole. Very soon, the teacher’s started to get involved and come up with ideas of their own.

The ideas of change that both the girls and teachers came up with were very inspiring and I know I’m not the only one who went home that day thinking about the things that were said. A member of the SRC then put together a video of all these ideas.

Another way the SRC directly involved the school was showcasing the amazing talents of the girls at Macarthur. We set up an exhibition at lunch and put together a large handful of different things girls had done like artworks, creative writing and photography. It was absolutely amazing seeing tables full of the wonderful works and awards of the girls.

The SRC also sold ribbons at lunch where we donated the money to unwomen.org an organisation dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women.

Throughout this week-long event there was one message we wanted to give to the girls of Macarthur Girls High School. Never give up because of your gender. Being a female should not be something that holds you back. It should be something that empowers you and gives you strength. Be proud and always hold your head up high.
